Nothing says summer like a day on the water. Erie is renowned for its access to the Great Lakes, and taking the opportunity to paddle on Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay, or Erie County’s inland lakes is a must-do item on your summer bucket list.
Whether you’re traveling with your family, friends, or a partner, use this itinerary as a starting point to spend a day paddling and exploring Erie County, Pennsylvania.
Kayaking the Lagoons of Presque Isle State Park
Best for: beginners and casual paddlers
Water type: calm and still
Rentals available: yes
In the center of Pennsylvania’s most visited state park, Presque Isle State Park, a calm, natural water trail offers some of the state’s best kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. It’s the perfect place to start the day due to the beginner-friendly calm waters, easily accessible launch areas, abundance of wildlife. It’s not uncommon to see eagles, osprey, beavers, otters, and more all on one morning paddle.
As with the rest of Presque Isle State Park, it’s free to launch a kayak or canoe with the appropriate launch permits. All canoes and kayaks can be launched from the Presque Isle Canoe and Boat Livery launch area, as well as the Vista Launch area, Niagara Launch, and The Lagoon Launch.
If you don’t own your own gear, kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals are available at Presque Isle Canoe & Boat Livery, located on Presque Isle State Park. If you’re new to paddling, consider going out with a guide on their Morning Eco Tour, or afternoon History Eco Tours.
Where to eat or drink after your paddle:
Check out the scene at Lavery Brewing Co. or U Pick 6 Public House, both within easy driving distance from Presque Isle State Park, and both featuring some of Erie’s best local craft beers. If you want to stick to a waterfront location, head to Oliver’s Beer Garden on Erie’s Bayfront, which features waterfront mini golf, and often has live music.
Kayaking on Edinboro Lake
Best for: beginners and casual paddlers
Water type: open lake
Rentals available: yes
On the southern border of Erie County lies Edinboro, Pennsylvania, a college town known for its abundance of natural resources and activities, including Edinboro Lake. The calm and sheltered water is still beginner-friendly, but more wide open than the Lagoons.
For those who need to rent a kayak, rentals are available any time via Rent.Fun! at the launch on Lakeside Drive. Kayak and canoe rentals are also available at Edinboro Lake Resort.

The atmosphere at the Sunset Grill at Edinboro Lake Resort is peak summer: open air dining and a patio directly on Edinboro Lake, often with live music. Get there early – the casual dining venue doesn’t accept reservations, but offers prime sunset views. Another local landmark, the Edinboro Hotel Bar, is nearby, and known for its thriving night life.
