When it comes to sports, Erie has so much to cheer for! Erie County is home to three minor-pro sports teams, four universities with teams represented in the NCAA Divisions I, II and III and a thriving sports tourism scene.
The Erie Otters are a member of the prestigious 20-team Ontario Hockey League (OHL), playing October through April at the Erie Insurance Arena in Downtown Erie. The OHL is a member league of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), known as the world’s premiere player development league for the National Hockey League (NHL). Current Otters alumni include two-time scoring champion and 2017 NHL MVP Connor McDavid, 2020 and 2021 Stanley Cup Champions Anthony Cirelli and Erik Cernak, 2019 Stanley Cup Champion and Playoff MVP Ryan O’Reilly and Chicago Blackhawks stars Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome.
DeBrincat now plays for the Detroit Red Wings and Strome for the Washington Capitals.
The Erie SeaWolves are the AA Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, playing April through September at UPMC Park in Downtown Erie. The newly renovated ballpark features a new main entrance, party deck, picnic garden, club level suites and a kids fun zone. The SeaWolves event staff provides onsite catering and event services for planning corporate functions and private parties. Over the course of their many seasons in Erie, the boys of summer have entertained more than five million people. Some of the Major League Baseball stars who have come up through the SeaWolves organization include Justin Verlander, Curtis Granderson, Eugenio Suarez, Nick Castellanos, and Andrew Miller.
Erie Commodores FC is the highest level soccer club in Erie. The Commodores men's team compete in the National Premier Soccer League, a nationwide amateur league at the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. The Commodores women's team compete in the United Women's Soccer League. Both the mens’ and womens’ home games are played at the Erie Sports Center.
Located in nearby North East, Lake Erie Speedway is considered one of Pennsylvania's premier outdoor entertainment centers. Its wide range of entertainment events includes Crash-A-Rama, monster truck shows, drifting and auto shows, live racing, 5k runs and more. The speedway’s season runs May through September. Pictured.
The Erie Sports Commission, a division of VisitErie, is a sports tourism agency offering comprehensive support services for event directors hosting sporting events in Erie. Services provided include bid development, grant funding, facility procurement, marketing and promotions, and more.
