Presque Isle State Park
All of Pennsylvania’s State Parks are free to enter and explore, including the most-visited one, Presque Isle State Park. In the summer, visitors and locals enjoy swimming and relaxing on the 13 miles of sandy beaches at no cost, but there are so many things to do at Presque Isle year-round for little or no cost.
- Birding: Pick up a bird checklist at the Nature Shop at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center on your way into the park, and see how many you can find. More than 339 species of birds have been identified on the peninsula.
- Free Lagoon Tours: Lagoon by Pontoon are free guided boat rides through the lagoons near Misery Bay at Presque Isle, where park staff and volunteers share information about plants and animals that live there, as well as local history. The rides are free, but are first-come first served.
Rides offered Friday, Saturday, Sundays at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and noon, from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Located at Presque Isle Canoe and Boat Rentals. - Bike or Surrey: Renting a bicycle, aquabike, or surrey is a low-cost way to see Presque Isle from a new angle.
Erie Bluffs State Park
Erie County is home to a second state park – the Erie Bluffs, located just over the Ohio state line. Featuring one mile of shoreline, the park offers stunning views of Lake Erie and is well loved for hiking and mountain biking.
Erie’s Historic Lighthouses: Low-Cost Tours
Three lighthouses call Erie home: the Presque Isle Lighthouse, the Erie Land Lighthouse, and the North Pier Light. Each offers a fascinating history, and while costs vary by site, admission is very budget-friendly.
Goodell Gardens & Homestead
Located in Edinboro on the southern edge of Erie County, Goodell Gardens comes alive each spring and summer. The location is historically significant in the diversity of cultivated plant species, and is a great representation of American heirloom gardening. Admission is donation-based, and guided tours are $5 per person.
Wine Tasting
Erie is the entryway to Lake Erie Wine Country, the largest wine region in the Great Lakes. Each of the 21 wineries located in this region offer tastings, and though the cost and parameters for sampling vary by winery, all are reasonably priced. Many wineries also offer live music at no cost, such as the Friday and Sunday Music Series at Arundel Cellars & Brewing.

The Erie Art Museum’s Access for All program gives visitors free admission to the museum on the first Thursday of each month from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., and the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Along with exhibits, visitors can participate in free art crafts.
The Brewerie at Union Station
Happy hour special pricing is available at the Brewerie at Union Station Monday, Wednesday, and Thursdays from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m., and 8 p.m. – 10 p.m. Specials include $5 draft beer, $2 off cocktails, and half price appetizers.
